The Good Life

"The Good Life" isn't a slogan on a license plate. It's an argument Nebraska makes every day — sometimes with hospitality, sometimes with stubbornness, sometimes with a **400-foot limestone tower** that refuses to look like anywhere else.

The Capitol is that argument in built form.

Not the biggest. Not the loudest. The most honest.

We didn't copy a dome because Washington had one. We planted a seed pod in the sky. We carved Napoleon next to Native thunderbirds. We let college kids joke about the silhouette while architects write NRHP essays about its significance.

**Both are Nebraska.** Kind and weird. Practical and symbolic. Cornfed and cosmopolitan when it counts.

What this series was always about

Twelve stories. One building. A cast — Goodhue, Meière, Lawrie, Alexander, hundreds of unnamed masons — who decided a flyover state deserved a **world-class art installation you can enter for free.**

You don't have to love government to love this government building. You just have to love a place that **tells the truth about itself in stone.**

Your Good Life homework

Bring someone who thinks Nebraska is only corn and football. Walk them through the rotunda. Point up. Point down. Tell one dad joke about the tower. Then tell the real design story before they can repeat the joke to someone else.

That's civic pride without the cringe. That's Lincoln being Lincoln.
